This is a very silly shirt that I’m not sure anyone will like (but my partner said they love it and want it, so I have the most important stamp of approval). I’ve never done this much free motion embroidered lettering before and I’m so happy it turned out okay. Phew!

Someone on TikTok brought up how they have trouble coming up with ideas for making appliqués, so here is how I get my brain moving. I also like to keep a note on my phone with a list of every idea I come up with (no matter how unachievable it may seem) to help me when I’m stuck, and it keeps me from forgetting any ideas I’ve had.

What things would you put in the mailbox? I think it would be really funny to wear it when you go to get the mail and actually put the letters in the mailbox sweater. And maybe I’d use the envelope as a coin purse.

I really love how this one turned out, and if I was more of a Christmas sweater person myself, I’d be tempted to keep it. I love making Christmas sweaters, but am not really one to wear them myself.

This little gingerbread guy can move around the house and sit on the gumdrop chairs, stand in front of the kitchen window, and sleep in the peppermint bed.

Who’d have thought that making 25 individual pockets, each with small appliqué numbers on them, would take me so long to make? Not me!

I don’t usually do quilting type projects, so this was a bit out of my comfort zone, hence why it took me longer to make than my usual stuff, but I looove how it turned out. The thrifted trim around the edges really brings it all together, I think.

And the pockets are the perfect size to fit whatever candies and trinkets you could possibly want.

I used free motion embroidery to stitch all of these little guys and the ski lift. This jacket is already a really cool piece, but I think it’s so much more fun now. I especially liked making the knit pattern look like their ski paths!

I had a sewn advent calendar growing up that had the cutest little trinkets inside of it, and getting to put them in each pouch was the best. Sewing each little pocket and each number was so tedious, but I love how it turned out! I thrifted this green trim and it was meant for this project because it matches perfectly.

This cute skiing sweater upcycle will be available in my winter sweater drop on 11/20! This was another embroidery heavy upcycle, with only the trees (and one hat) being appliqués.

The people were so small, I honestly wasn’t sure how they’d come out, but I really loved the idea of the knit patterns being part of their ski trails. It was actually a lot of fun to simplify them into these very tiny cartoonish figures.

Do you ski? It terrifies me. I’ll be making a snow rat instead, thank you.

Each footstep was embroidered by me with a free motion foot, not an embroidery machine. The fuzzy sweater looks just like snow, and I wasn’t sure the footsteps would show up well with all the fluff, but I think the effect turned out really nice! It’s much more embroidery focused than my usual appliqué work, but I love embroidery so much, I was excited to do this. That’s why it’s the first sweater for my upcoming drop that I did.

I found this super soft sweater and it instantly reminded me of snow. I wanted to try something more embroidery focused instead of using appliqué, so I embroidered some snowy footprints on it. Hopefully that’s what it looks like!

I really recommend trying out free motion embroidery if this intrigues you. I started out doing embroidery by hand, which is enjoyable in its own way, but I love how I can just glide the fabric around and use the needle like a pen. It takes some practice to get a feel for it, but it’s fun to experiment with.

It’s starting to get pretty chilly in a lot of places, so it may be a good time to get a jacket… on a completely unrelated note, here are some pics of the upcycled cyber jacket (L).

This jacket was donated to me, and I was having such a tough time coming up with what to do with it. I liked the look the high collar gave it and thought maybe I could turn it into some y2k Cybercore buzzword something-or-other jacket. Really I just wanted to make cool patterns.

These were really tough patches to sew on. I used a pillowcase to cut these long strips, and they were giving me so much trouble to attach smoothly. I think it all worked out in the end though. It’s not perfectly symmetrical, but I never really intended it to be. I like a little handmade imperfection.

Here are some close ups of the upcycled gothic dollhouse hoodie (L). This was maybe one of the most fun upcycles to make. I love making miniatures and dollhouses, so this really scratched that itch.

The vampire and the vampire cat attach to various areas of the house with hook and loop tape, but I’m proud of how I hid it. The footprints, vase, teapot, pillows, and cat bed are all made with the soft side of hook and loop tape.

I already have plans to make a winter version of this, which will be coming in my November winter sweater drop 👀

Some close ups of the upcycled ocean sunset sweater (XL)

The moment I saw this sweater at the thrift store, I knew it had to become an ocean sunset. The changing colors just fit so perfect for a scene like this. And it gave me a good excuse to make a bunch of sea life appliqués with some fun scrap fabrics I hadn’t really used much of before. As always, all materials are secondhand!

I don’t usually do appliqué patches that wrap around the side of a top, so the whale gave me a little trouble, but I’m happy with how it turned out!

Mending doesn’t always have to mean hiding. Sashiko stitching has recently gained some traction, as well as other more visible mending styles, which I think is great! But I’m too impatient to hand stitch, so I prefer the patch method.

Think creatively! A patch can not only repair a torn item, but breathe new life into it and make it even more fun than it was before!

The fabric for the patches all came from secondhand items too, which is a great use for those clothing items that would need some serious Frankensteining to bring back to life. Cut em up as patches instead!

I asked you guys if you thought I should leave the book blank to fill in yourself or cover it in embroidered doodles, and it was a pretty split vote. I did a little bit of both by having some embroidered doodles around the edges but leaving the middle blank for you to doodle in yourself. That way it’s cute whether you draw in it or not.
