I really struggled figuring out what to do with this sweater. I decided on cookies on one side and stockings on the other, but after I added the cookies, I realized that stockings looked too busy. Sometimes simple is best, and I often struggle knowing when to stop working on an art piece.

This is basically a three-in-one interactive piece. The mailbox flag lifts and lowers, the mailbox is a full sized pocket to hold things, and the letter inside is a pouch that opens and can also hold things!! Tagged size 18W/20W and available on 11/20 with many other interactive winter sweaters!!

What things would you put in the mailbox? I think it would be really funny to wear it when you go to get the mail and actually put the letters in the mailbox sweater. And maybe I’d use the envelope as a coin purse.

I really love how this one turned out, and if I was more of a Christmas sweater person myself, I’d be tempted to keep it. I love making Christmas sweaters, but am not really one to wear them myself.

This little gingerbread guy can move around the house and sit on the gumdrop chairs, stand in front of the kitchen window, and sleep in the peppermint bed.

Who’d have thought that making 25 individual pockets, each with small appliqué numbers on them, would take me so long to make? Not me!

I don’t usually do quilting type projects, so this was a bit out of my comfort zone, hence why it took me longer to make than my usual stuff, but I looove how it turned out. The thrifted trim around the edges really brings it all together, I think.

And the pockets are the perfect size to fit whatever candies and trinkets you could possibly want.

I used free motion embroidery to stitch all of these little guys and the ski lift. This jacket is already a really cool piece, but I think it’s so much more fun now. I especially liked making the knit pattern look like their ski paths!

Each footstep was embroidered by me with a free motion foot, not an embroidery machine. The fuzzy sweater looks just like snow, and I wasn’t sure the footsteps would show up well with all the fluff, but I think the effect turned out really nice! It’s much more embroidery focused than my usual appliqué work, but I love embroidery so much, I was excited to do this. That’s why it’s the first sweater for my upcoming drop that I did.

I found this super soft sweater and it instantly reminded me of snow. I wanted to try something more embroidery focused instead of using appliqué, so I embroidered some snowy footprints on it. Hopefully that’s what it looks like!

I really recommend trying out free motion embroidery if this intrigues you. I started out doing embroidery by hand, which is enjoyable in its own way, but I love how I can just glide the fabric around and use the needle like a pen. It takes some practice to get a feel for it, but it’s fun to experiment with.

This jacket was donated to me, and I was having such a tough time coming up with what to do with it. I liked the look the high collar gave it and thought maybe I could turn it into some y2k Cybercore buzzword something-or-other jacket. Really I just wanted to make cool patterns.

These were really tough patches to sew on. I used a pillowcase to cut these long strips, and they were giving me so much trouble to attach smoothly. I think it all worked out in the end though. It’s not perfectly symmetrical, but I never really intended it to be. I like a little handmade imperfection.

Here are some close ups of the upcycled gothic dollhouse hoodie (L). This was maybe one of the most fun upcycles to make. I love making miniatures and dollhouses, so this really scratched that itch.

The vampire and the vampire cat attach to various areas of the house with hook and loop tape, but I’m proud of how I hid it. The footprints, vase, teapot, pillows, and cat bed are all made with the soft side of hook and loop tape.

Here are some close ups of the upcycled gothic dollhouse hoodie (L). This was maybe one of the most fun upcycles to make. I love making miniatures and dollhouses, so this really scratched that itch.

The vampire and the vampire cat attach to various areas of the house with hook and loop tape, but I’m proud of how I hid it. The footprints, vase, teapot, pillows, and cat bed are all made with the soft side of hook and loop tape.

The moment I saw this sweater at the thrift store, I knew it had to become an ocean sunset. The changing colors just fit so perfect for a scene like this. And it gave me a good excuse to make a bunch of sea life appliqués with some fun scrap fabrics I hadn’t really used much of before. As always, all materials are secondhand!

I don’t usually do appliqué patches that wrap around the side of a top, so the whale gave me a little trouble, but I’m happy with how it turned out!

Mending doesn’t always have to mean hiding. Sashiko stitching has recently gained some traction, as well as other more visible mending styles, which I think is great! But I’m too impatient to hand stitch, so I prefer the patch method.

Think creatively! A patch can not only repair a torn item, but breathe new life into it and make it even more fun than it was before!

The fabric for the patches all came from secondhand items too, which is a great use for those clothing items that would need some serious Frankensteining to bring back to life. Cut em up as patches instead!

I have a lot of fun adding interactive elements to my clothing, and something about a pencil cup appliqué that actually works as a pencil cup is so fun to me. I asked you guys if you thought I should leave the book blank to fill in yourself or cover it in embroidered doodles, and it was a pretty split vote. I did a little bit of both by having some embroidered doodles around the edges but leaving the middle blank for you to doodle in yourself. That way it’s cute whether you draw in it or not.

I spotted these when I was thrifting with a friend and knew I had to make a sequel to my ant picnic shirt. If I still had that shirt, I’d take pictures of them together, but alas that shirt has found its new home. These pants however… 👀

I will watch or listen to things while I’m sewing, so the memory of whatever I was watching gets kind of embedded into the project for me. These pants are infused with Little Miss Sunshine, for instance.

I know these are more summer pants than fall ones, but come on, picnics are year round (you just might have to have them indoors on your carpet sometimes). Each appliqué patch is made with secondhand materials!

Details of the upcycled cozy bear tee (M)

For this shirt, I wanted to try purposefully wrinkling the appliqué, instead of trying to keep it as smooth as possible like I usually do. It was actually harder than I thought to make purposeful, but unmoving wrinkles. I think it made a fun messy blanket effect though, as if it was early morning and the bear had been tossing around at night (like I do). And the bedsheet is actually made from a real bedsheet!

I think it’s a really cute tee, and it’s still waiting for someone to snag it!

Close ups of the upcycled sleepy cat cardigan (M/L)! Still waiting for its perfect match.

This cardigan originally had a lot of traditional tattoo style patches on it. A friend of mine thrifted it for those patches, but didn’t fit in the actual cardigan, so it was donated to me to give it a new life. The style and those big pearl buttons made me think of a very cozy lady with fuzzy slippers, a book, and a big cat.

The cup is a pocket and the book opens! It also comes with a washable fabric marker that you can use to draw or write in the book and then wash it off with water. My favorite element though is the appliqué cat. I spent a lot of time embroidering all that fur, and I love how it came out. I usually do a zigzag stitch around the edges to reduce fraying, but I left the edges frayed for this one to look like fuzzy fur.

Strike Master Merino Sweater (L)

I’m happy with how this sweater turned out. I like trying to show motion in a still image and was inspired by photo guides of bowling throws. The man is sewn with free motion embroidery, which I love doing.

This merino wool sweater was donated to me with a few small holes in it, which I was able to patch over with the appliqué patches. Now it’s as good as new and more fun. Available now!

I was donated this cardigan to upcycle and using only recycled materials, it has been transformed into something interactive and fun! This was my first time embroidering fur, but I think the cat turned out so cute. It’s also the one appliqué patch that I left with raw edges to look like the cat’s fuzzy fur.

You guys fell in love with my ant picnic shirt, so when I saw these pants at the thrift, I just knew they would be my next upcycling project. I think these are sooo fun, I’m tempted to keep them for myself.

I had a dream that I made this and everyone thought it sucked lol. Let’s see if that dream was actually a prophecy?

Honestly though, I like how it turned out. It’s different than what I usually do, and handling those long wobbly pieces of fabric was not easy. But I think it gives it a cool look that really makes this jacket unique. I just know someone could style the heck out of this. That someone is just not me.
